New life

This summer, the kids got to see nature up close and personal when a baby bird was planted in our neighbor's front yard.  At first we thought he fell out of the tree, but upon further investigation, we found that his mama had actually put him there.  This is how this particular breed of bird learns to fly, the mama plants it on the ground, and protectively watches from a nearby tree.  As the baby flaps it's wings and walks around on the ground, he develops his necessary flying muscles.

When we first found him, he'd squawk a great big warning to us, and his mama would go CRAZY in a nearby tree, even doing dive bomb, fly-by warnings!  However, we all watched this whole thing unfold, while giving the baby the space he needed to do his job and they actually seemed to get comfortable with us stopping by to see how our little guy was doing each day.  One day they were gone, so I know he did his job well.  :)
